1. Who we are
The Coalition for Responsible Energy (C4RE) is a coalition based in Alberta. C4RE is responsible for the personal information collected through ResponsiblEenergyAB.ca.
This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have. “Personal information” means information about an identifiable individual. In this policy, “we”, “us” and “our” mean C4RE.
We follow Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).
2. What we collect
We collect what information you choose to give us:
- From sign-up forms, we collect your first name, email address and postal code. If you choose, you can also give us your last name, phone number, city or town, X (Twitter) handle, comments, and tell us whether you want to volunteer.
- From emails you send us, we collect whatever you include.
You don’t have to give us anything to read the site, and some fields on our forms are optional.
We also collect some technical information when you visit. See Cookies and analytics.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- send you updates about C4RE’s work and ways to take action (see How we contact you);
- contact you about volunteering and other ways to get involved, including by phone call or text message if you give us your number;
- answer questions and messages you send us;
- understand how people use our website, so we can improve it (see Cookies and analytics).
We don’t use it for anything else without asking you first.
4. How we contact you
If you sign up on our website, we will send you email updates about C4RE’s work and ways to take action. If you give us your phone number, we may contact you by phone call or text message about volunteering and other ways to get involved.
Every email from us has an unsubscribe link. You can also email [email protected] at any time and ask us to stop contacting you.
Our email tools tell us whether our emails are opened and which links are clicked, so we can see what is useful.
5. Cookies and analytics
The cookies and tracking tools on this site are:
- Google Analytics, provided by Google: tells us how many people visit, which pages they view, roughly where they are and how they found us. The cookies can last up to two years.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics, provided by Cloudflare: counts visits and measures how fast pages load. It does not set cookies.
- Page cache cookie, provided by our website software: helps serve pages faster. It lasts two days.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, or use Google’s opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout to stop Google Analytics. We don’t use advertising pixels on this site.
6. Who we share information with
We don’t sell, rent or trade your information. We don’t give it to other organizations, including the members of our coalition.
We use these service providers to run our websites and send email. They handle your information on our behalf, unless their entry below says otherwise:
- OVHcloud: hosts this website and stores the sign-up forms you submit. Location: Canada.
- Cloudflare: delivers and protects this website and provides visit statistics. Location: the United States and the European Economic Area, and it may be accessed from other countries where Cloudflare operates.
- Google: provides Google Analytics. Location: Google’s servers around the world, including the United States.
- Action Network: keeps our supporter list and sends our update emails. Location: United States.
Some of these providers store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States and the European Economic Area. While it is there, the laws of that country apply to it, and its courts or government may be able to get access to it. To get written information about how we use service providers outside Canada, or to ask a question about it, contact our Privacy Contact (see Questions and complaints).
We may also disclose information when a law requires or allows it, for example to respond to a court order.
7. Keeping information safe, and for how long
We keep your information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy.
We take reasonable steps to protect it from loss, misuse and unauthorized access. Only C4RE staff can see supporter information.
If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will report it to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, as the law requires. We will also tell you directly if the Commissioner requires it, or if we think it will help you protect yourself.
8. Seeing, correcting and deleting your information
You can ask us:
- for a copy of the personal information we have about you, and how we have used and shared it;
- to correct it if it is wrong;
- to stop using it, or to delete it.
Email [email protected]. We will respond within 45 days, as Alberta law requires. There is no charge.
If we delete your information, we may keep your email address on a do-not-contact list so we don’t contact you again by mistake.
9. Questions and complaints
Our Privacy Contact answers questions about this policy and about how we handle personal information: [email protected].
You can also write to us by mail at 398 – 225 Railway Street East, Cochrane, AB T4C 2C3
If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta at oipc.ab.ca or 1-888-878-4044. To ask the Commissioner to review a decision we made about your request, you generally need to do so within 30 days of hearing from us.
10. Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page and update the date at the top. If we want to use information you have already given us for a new purpose, we will ask you first.
